David Butt Philip - Baritone David was born and brought up in Wells in Somerset and began his musical training as a chorister at Peterborough Cathedral. He studied for four years at the Royal Northern College of Music with Peter Alexander Wilson, appearing in the college’s productions of Don Giovanni, The Rake’s Progress, La Cenerentola and La Rondine. Awards include the 2004 Bessie Cronshaw Song Cycle Prize, the 2006 John Cameron Prize for Lieder (both RNCM), the 2006 Elena Gerhardt Lieder Prize and in 2007 the prestigious Richard Lewis/Jean Shanks Award (both RAM). Recent concert performances include Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen with Blackburn Symphony Orchestra and recitals with the pianist Simon Lane in Bristol’s Colston Hall and London’s Wigmore Hall. David is currently in the final year of the postgraduate opera course at the Royal Academy of Music where he studies with Glenville Hargreaves and Iain Ledingham. Operatic roles include Ebn Hakia (Iolanta), Betto (Gianni Schicchi) and Junius (The Rape of Lucretia) for Royal Academy opera andMr Gedge (Albert Herring) for British Youth Opera. His studies at the RAM are generously supported by the Baroness De Turckheim vocal scholarship (Drapers Company), a Sybil Tutton Award (MBF) and the Josephine Baker Trust. As supplied by David |
